Does it hurt like when you bruise yourself, or hurt internally?
If it hurts like a bruise (sore, achy), wait a couple of days to see if it gets better.
If it hurts internally (burning, hurts to move, breathe, etc.) you need to get an x-ray.

Depends on where it hurts. If it is in the center of your neck and upper back go to the ER right away and have your cervical vertebrae checked out. Injury to this area can cause paralysis or even death if the spinal cord is severed. If it is your lower back it is probably muscular or worst case scenario a compression fracture which takes time to heal. Basically if the pain is directly on your spine go get checked out if it is on either side of your vertebrae it is probably muscular in nature.

You just fell down the stairs and immediately logged in to yahoo to type a question instead of seeing a doctor?

If it hurts when you breathe, you may need to see your doctor right away. If you injured a rib it's possible to damage your lung. I hope you are alright. Sometimes during a fall you can really tense up and pull a muscle in your back. That muscle is the largest one in your body so it can really hurt. Best of luck to you!!

You probably bruised it. Give it a day or two, ice and rest. If it's still bad then call the doc. Good Luck. A back ache is no fun.
