I just purchased a Ford Focus 2007 and I think it might have an AC/Heater problem. I notice that when I am driving with the AC/Heater off, this weird awful smell vaporizes the inside of my car. It like goes in my mouth and it's awful. Not sure if it's mildew. I try and burp and not inhale it. My head doesn't really hurt. It's more like some type of gas and it's coming out from the ventilation. But if I turn on the AC or heater, then there's really no smell. I have to open my window sometimes to get the smell out or just leave the AC on forever. What is this and how can I fix this? It's really getting on my nerves. Nice car, but awful odor.

Theres a good chance this is just that "new car" smell. The new car smell is actually nothing more than the glues and plastics used in the manufaturing process curing up and releasing vapors which in a brand new car with the windows up get quite strong. I would suggest leaving the windows down any time you can for the first month or so, after that it should just be a faint smell without the harmful vapors.

If the smell you are experiencing has a semi-sweet oder or taste you could have a very minor leak (hair line crack) in you heater core. I would get the car in and have the heater core checked.

Let the car Idle for a good 30 mins. with everything on. Then cut it off and try that. If that doesn`t work take to dealer and let them try it, let them smell it>

If it's a 2007 I'm sure there are warranties on it.

Take it to the dealership and tell them the problem.
