Good question. I wish when I started playing guitar that someone would have told me!
The FRET is the metal piece that is mounted into the FINGERBOARD. When fretting a guitar, for example at the 3rd fret, you would place your finger between the second and third fret- where you see the little dot on the side of the fingerboard.
Those dots, by the way, usually signify the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, then a double dot on the 12th, then 15th, 17th, 19th and so on. The reason there are 2 dots at the 12th fret is because that is the beginning of the second octave of that particular string.
Probably too much info, right? Sorry.

A fret is basically like a key on a piano or keyboard: each one in increasing order produces a higher note.
A fret bar is the little metal thing (I should say it's commonly metal) that seperates the note spaces on the guitar and also helps control the notes.

The metal parts are called the fret bars, the space between is the fret.

Guitar frets are actually the nickel (metal) on the neck, but when refering to playing actual notes , chords , etc. the term "frets" is used for playing in between the metal. 2. Look at the dots on your neck - the first one is the 3rd fret , and it goes 3,5,7,9,12 and so on. 3. "Guitar Hero" is not real guitar, real guitar doesn't have 5 color coded buttons used as "frets" , LOL!
