For instance, are retailers required to pay your return shipping when returning a defective product? If you decide to go with another brand and not exchange with the same retailer, are they required to reimburse the initial shipping cost to you?

No. The shipping policy is dependent to each retailer.

In 90% of the cases, return shipping is the responsibility of the customer.

Since each online retailer have their own policy, it is better to check their return policies. Ask the 800 number customer service rep about their policy. if they do not have any 800 number, stay away from those retailers. amazon will be an exception to that.

don't know about return shipping but I do know about lost shipping, sent packages to grand kids UPS lost the packages and I bought on line from TOY R US and no one paid me back anything...sorry to use your forum, just needed to rant.
