Merchandising and putting butts in the seats. Players aren't 100% paid for what they can do on the field but are partly paid for how many more tickets can be sold and how much more merchandising can be bought by fat-wallet fans and how much TV revenue can be gained. Don't forget that fans play a part in these players salaries by buying $50 tickets and $8 beers.

Coming from a huge Mets fan, I love Mike Piazza. But $9 million for a year is still waay too much for a DH. Mike is past his prime. For a DH, they shouldn't have paid that much.

NOOOOO, Mike Piazza is WAY past his prime and he isn't that good of a hitter anymore. He should only be worth about 3/4 million for a year and maybe not even that. Suppan recently signed for 6 million for one year and he was the NL Championship Series MVP, i know he's a pitcher but Piazza is not worth 9 million.

That is a little steep for an aging slugger, but I have to disagree with the guy who said he is no longer a good hitter. I live in San Diego and watched Mike play all year last year. I'm telling you he can still swing the bat. Playing in limited games at spacious Petco Park, not known as a hitters park, he still hit over 20 homers and hit close to .300 last year, and in some good clutch situations. I think he played in 126 games, but a lot of those were pinch hits, he only started like 90 games behind the plate.

He is still definitely a good hitter, but maybe not at 9 million. I agree more like 3-5 million.

Nope. He is probably worth about 4.5 million, half of what he is worth right now. (9) He isn't as good a power hitter and catcher as he was on the Mets in the 00 WS. HE isn't as good as in his prime, so I don't know why the Padres would give so much money for him to be their DH.

As a life long Mets fan, I think $9M to DH is way too much even for Piazza. As much as I liked him as our catcher, his only meaningful contributions to the Mets was his bat. He's getting up there in years, so he may only have one year left.

Not at all. He might hit a few out this year but hes no where worth 9 mil. Maybe a 1 or 2 mil.

Unfortunately, salaries in baseball are skyrocketing faster than ever -- the average player salary has surpassed $3 million. So within the market, considering other players and the sums they are getting, I would say yes, but on talent, I would say no.
