Evans was born in New Franklin, Missouri, and raised on a farm near there, as the oldest girl among seven children. Music always has been a part of her life; by age five she was singing every weekend in her family's band. At age eight, she was struck by an automobile in front of the family home, and both her legs suffered multiple fractures. Recuperating for months in a wheelchair, she continued singing to help pay her medical bills. When she was 16, she began performing at a nightclub near Columbia, Missouri, a gig that lasted two years.

The first of 2 children, Gretchen Wilson was raised near a small town with a population of 727. She lived near in Pocahontas, Illinois, raised by a single mother, who was 16 when Wilson was born. Wilson has a younger brother, Joshua. Her father left two years after Gretchen was born. Wilson grew up in poverty, living in a succession of trailers as her mother struggled to pay the rent by working as a waitress at a diner then at that time. She left school during the ninth grade.
