I'm liberal and I don't think I'd lean towards such some of the issues if it wasn't for my abilty to understand, empathize/sympathize, and care about people

No. Common sense determines my political viewpoint. Common sense and simply what makes sense. Politics complicates the most simple of issues. My empathy quotient determines what charitable organization I donate to.
