Sheapheads bay is nice but quite pricey, it's best if you're italian or jewish too.

The alternatives are east flatbush, clinton hills and brooklyn heights (downtown brookln and somewhat expensive).

Bay Ridge is also very nice and close to queens - also has easy access to manhattan.

As a fellow New Yorker Sheepshead Bay is a good neighborhood. It is much cheaper to rent then buy. A decent apartment for a 2 bedroom will run $1k + depending on where. My fiancee's uncle lives in Gravesend by the train in a rent stabilized building and pays $850 a month for a nice sized 2 bedroom. There are many good neighborhoods around there such as Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Mill Basin. It is a farther commute to NYC than other neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo, Park Slope, Williamsburg are the more expensive areas.
