So far we've seen no verifiable evidence of other sentient species. That said, I believe with some certainty that somewhere in our galaxy at some past, present, or future time, a sentient species did/does/will exist.

Why haven't we heard from them?

Perhaps they are not technologically advanced enough to be heard. They may be mastering stone knives right now, or experiencing their own Rennaisance.

Perhaps they are here right now. Any species sufficiently advanced to travel interstellar distances would be able to hide or masquerade with ease. That Boeing 737 that just flew by may be a surveillance craft.

Perhaps they are so far away they will never notice us and vice versa.

Perhaps they existed a million years ago and died out.

Perhaps they will exist a million years from now.

It is really impossible to know for sure.

The Drake Equation suggests that there is sentient life out there. The Fermi Paradox casts doubt. Play around with the calculation form at the second link and see what you think.

Yes, I do believe in Aliens, and it just scares the pants off of me. I lay in bed at night shaking in fear of them landing on my roof top, in the driveway, or down the street with their long skinney necks, and those G-Man Blaster Guns shooting everything in sight. I don't have anything to protect myself with except mother's rolling pin, and the kitchen bread knife, so I am real skerred. Last night I was shaking from fright so bad I think I peed the bed. A lady friend I have down the road is skerred of them also. I don't know what we are goiing to do. I think this is all George Bush's fault.
He should have let that other guy win the election and we would not have these problems today.

I saw a large silver saucer shaped craft hovering a few hundred feet up. and I swear it was mind controlling other people traveling on highway 85 Greenville S.C. it was right above fiber industries.about 30 years ago.I had a thought when I saw it.just go on down the road.but I knew that wasn't my thought. I pulled over.and watched it. just sit there a few hundred feet above that building.it was not a balloon. I could have hit it if I had my rifle.a couple of hundred cars went by as I sat there on the side of the road, and it was RIGHT THERE and people were in the parking lot. and no one else was looking at it.I was not drinking or doing drugs. I believe very much in God and I tell you may I burn IN hell if I am lying. I know what I saw. people should know that not only are they here, but they have some mind control methods.but I dont think they came this far to sight see, there up to something. are we just breeders for the children they take away to be there slaves? You allways hear of people seeing them. taking pictures of them. there here. no doubt about it.the point is. What are they up to?. finding out about why there here should be a priority.that is what matters.

Yes. Simply put, the liklihood of there NOT being extraterrestrial life somewhere in the universe is very low with our current understanding of celestial mechanics.

Dr. Frank Drake formulated the Drake Equation. This takes into account:

The Drake equation states that:

N = R* fp ne fl fi fc L

where:

N is the number of civilizations in our galaxy with which we might expect to be able to communicate at any given time

and the rest are parameters associated with fluctuations affecting intelligent life and its ability to contact other intelligent life. Anyway, the final result, assuming we have estimated correctly, is that 1000 stars in our galaxy harbor intelligent life.

Of course, Drake could be wrong...
