A female horse that has had a foal (baby) is typically called a mare or broodmare. I female horse that has not had a foal is typically called a filly (NOT a philly or fillie) or a maiden mare. A female horse that has not had a foal but is over 5 years of age is often referred to as a mare. When talking about the mother of a horse, it is referred to as the dam. If a mare has has been fixed so she cannot have any foals she is referred to as a spayed mare.

A foal (a baby horse) is a filly if its female and a colt if its a male. After four years a female horse is a mare and a male is a stalion unless you castrate him then he is a gelding hope this helped

Because it would be horribly expensive, dangerous for the mare as horses don't take well to abdominal surgery, and because there's no need to because we have a culture of keeping mares and stallions apart. This generally means stallions lead frustrated and lonely lives, which is why most of them are gelded.
