You shouldn't turn it more than 1 or 2 degrees lower than you set it during other occupied periods. Your heating/cooling system is made and installed for your comfort. Set it to where it is comfortable for you. I read a book called What's Heating You and it was very helpful. Can't spam it but i found it on the net. Don't waste the money on a programmable thermostat. It doesn't take but a second to push a button and it will become habit quickly.

Every degree you set it back will save you money. The rule of thumb would be what ever temp your comfortable with. I have an automatic setback thermostat and at bedtime it setbacks to 67deg. One hour before we get up it automatically brings it back to 74deg so it's nice and comfortable. Setback thermostats are relatively inexpensive and once set U don't have to give it a thought while ur saving money on the energy cost.
Good Luck

Set the thermostat at a temperature and just leave it alone. Many people think when it's too warm, they have a tendency to turn it down when it's not on at all. If it is set at a certain temperature, it will kick on when the ambient temperature falls below the set temperature, NOT when it is above the ambient air temperature.

As low as you can do so comfortably. If you've got lots of blankets and warm pajamas what's wrong with lowering the heat at night? Keep one thing in mind though. If you lower it too much you may risk pipes freezing, but most people I know wouldn't be comfortable sleeping in temperatures below freezing - no matter how many blankets you have!
