I am wondering if there is any real difference between the 2 different tanks of fish. You see the big tank with 12 feeder goldfish for about 1.29, and then there is the single bought goldfish in the smaller tanks. SO are they the same? DO they just separate out some and charge you more for those? What is the difference , if there is any in these two.

The bigger ones are just a few months older! They grow about an inch in the first 2 months! Go for the cheaper ones! You will probably have to treat them for disease as most feeder fish are kept in such crowded tanks they almost always get diseases. Watch them for the first 2 weeks in case they start to get ick or tail rot. They sell medicine which can save them if it is given early enough. I have 3 one year old feeder fish that are almost 6 inches long each. Feeders are just babies, go ahead and love them ;~)

It depends on the quality of the pet store and where they are getting the fish from. No- these fish should not be the same but in some places you are probably right, they taks some out and charge you more. Fish can be "gutt loaded" just like crickets and worms. This means they are given special food that is high in vitamins and calcium- in levels too high for the fish to absorb but they retain the good stuff and when you use them as feeders they give these vitamins to whatever is eating them. You can guttload your own fish just by purchasing the special food and buying adolescent godfish, it's much cheaper to do it this way if you are going through a lot of feeders.
Also, most of the non-feeder goldfish are breed to be colorful or have longer fins, big eyes, etc. which are more appealing to customers looking for a pet.

I think it's all a matter of size. A few years ago I got about 30 feeder goldfish for free from a carnival that was leaving town. You know, the tiny ones that are half dead? I took them home and put them in a 10 gallon aquarium. Of course, over the next week or so about half of them died. But the 15 or so that were left flourished!! I treated them for diseases and made sure the water was pH balanced. I fed them crushed up cat food (suggested by my science teacher) and within a few months they were not tiny dying fish. Their tails were long and flowing and their color was brilliant!! (One fish's tail was longer than the rest of it!) So apparantly it's not a different breed, just a poorer quality and size. And they grow to the size of their environment, so mine stopped at about 2 inches. If you put them in a larger tank or have fewer fish, they will get much bigger.

If you get feeder rather than regular goldfish, you can expect at least some of them to die, but if properly taken care of, they will be awesome in time. Good Luck!!

Feeder goldfish and regular goldfish are in essence the same thing, but feeders are much lower quality. They are mass produced and poor quality fish are not culled (kinks, missing eyes, etc).
Feeder fish are also not necessarily fed properly or kept with adequate filtration, and it opens up a door to all sorts of parasites and diseases.

Also, feeder goldfish are "comet" or "common goldfish" - these can grow to 2 feet and need to live in ponds. "Fancy" goldfish are smaller, 5-7", and need 15-20 gallons of water per fish.

We used to buy about 10-15 and then keep them. In the first few days most of them would die, but 2-3 would live.
They aren't as healthy, kept in poor conditions, and some have very obvious problems, but for under 2 bucks, I was willing to take my chances
