I really want to visit Jamaica with my husband. I am looking around at flight and hotel packages just for the heck of it. I was just wondering if anyone has ever vacationed there. What was your experiance like? Where did you stay? What sorts of activities did you do?

I’ve been to Jamaica many times with my family and with a “girls only” trip. I’ve never felt unsafe or uncomfortable.

If you are traveling with your family, you might want to consider a large resort. Most of these resorts provide an “all inclusive” option which includes your room, on-site entertainment, activities, food and drinks for the duration of your stay. This is a great option for kids. They can go eat at any time! Most of these resorts are loud with lots of activities for all ages. My kids love the “kid’s clubs”, biking, horseback riding and paddle boats.

There are several adults-only resorts. Make sure you investigate these resorts before booking because some are nude and some are not! You can find some that are laid back and relaxing (ie. spas, no loud music, etc) or resorts for active adults (ie. tennis, workout rooms, golf, etc).

We found a wonderful, small resort in Negril with quaint little cabins which my husband and I went to back in September. We absolutely loved it because there was no loud music, no kids, no loud neighbors! It was heaven!

In Montego Bay, we stayed at Jack Tar (the name has changed now and I don’t know the new name). This was a great little resort with lots of activities but just remember it is in a big city and you get the big city feel.

In Negril, I’ve stayed at Sunset At the Palms (the relaxing resort - http://www.sunsetatthepalms.com/) and The Rui Tropical Bay and Rui Negril (both active resorts for families – http://www.riu.com/en/hotel-riu-tropical-bay-negril-jamaica.html).

I’ve never been to Ocho Rios, so I can’t give advice on that area of Jamaica.

In Negril, A great place to eat is Xtabi. It’s a nice restaurant on the cliffs and a romantic place to watch the sunset. Also along the same highway is Ricks where you can watch cliff divers and the sunset.

My wife and I have gone to Jamaica every year for the past 5 years. We stay at an all inclusive resort called Grand Lido Braco. It is truly beautiful and the staff is great. Literally everything on site is included - including golf if you play. The food is actually very good which is different than other all inclusives we have done.

Braco is located on the north shore of the island and is part of the Superclubs resorts family. You can definately get information on their website.

We have gone off site for trips around the island. We swam with dolphins one year. Those trips are not included but they help set it all up. To get there we took a cab and I didn't feel unsafe doing it but I am not sure I would just go in some towns at night alone.

On the resort, we swam, did other water sports, and participated in a lot of the resort events. Every week they have a street party with authentic Jamaican food. There are theme parties and night like a toga party and a pajama party.

Another plus for us is that there are no young kids there because you have to be 16. We leave the kids at home and get away.

It's a great resort.

Jamaica's amazing. I go there every 3 years. I've stayed all over the island, and the best place for Tourists to go is Ocho Rios. The best place to stay there is "The Jamaica Grande". It's an amazing hotel. It's right on the beach, safe, beautiful, great food, nightly entertainment...etc. All inclusive hotels like this are great, because you never have to worry about activities. There are always a tonne of things going on! Check out the link below for customer reviews, pictures, and virtual tours. Have a blast!! Email me if you want more info.

I've been to Jamaica several times, both independently and as part of a package. Many people enjoy Jamaica through all-inclusive resorts. There are a variety of different levels (and prices) of all-inclusives from luxury to adult-only to nudist to family oriented. The downside to all-inclusives is that you don't get to see much of the 'real' Jamaica or meet many local people as the majority of activities are on-site or organized tours. Last time we stayed at the Starfish Trelawny resort and enojyed rafting on the Martha Brae, climbing Dunn's River Falls, and touring the Plantations around Montego Bay.

We chose to rent a car whilst we were there and drive to the Appleton Rum Estates. I enjoyed getting out of the walled-in resort and seeing the smaller towns and meeting real people. The roads were quite narrow and unpaved in many sections, so be aware of that if you go independently.

While many people are put off by the pushiness of touts and hawkers in Jamaica, I find that a bit of politeness goes a long way.

I went to Negril in January and had a blast. I stayed at the RIU Tropical Bay. It was a nice hotel. We went for a couple boat rides and snorkeled - it was so much fun. Absolutely beautiful! If it is just you and your husband that are going you may want to consider staying at a couples only resort like Sandals or Beaches (no kids). Those resorts are very nice. I have heard Ocho Rios is also a very nice place to go. This time of year is perfect for a trip to Jamaica!

My wife and I were there this past July and LOVED it. The island is just beautiful and the resort we stayed at was tons of fun! We stayed at Breezes Runaway Bay and were delighted with that resort. There are almost non-stop activities and included pool volleyball, beach games, drinking games, a sing along piano bar, and so much more. If you are thinking about going then I would suggest you give LOTS of thought to what you want in a resort. We want a no kids resort that offered a party atmosphere. Other resorts cater to children while others to very adult activities. Still others specialize in relaxation. There are lots of different types to select from so decide what it is that you and your husband want in one and go from there. Then go to TripAdvisor.com and research. The time spent doing that will make your vacation so much better.

It's beautiful and the people are friendly. I went to a flea market and drank beer on the beach just like the one that they have for the cellular commercial. What fun! I went snorkeling and took a speed boat cruise around the island. Got drunk on too much rum runners. That wasn't so fun, but the people were kind to me and took care of me getting me a cloth for my forehead and helping me back to my hotel room. I was in my 20's so I guess they have seen a lot of that. I went back in my 30's. Warm waters, beautiful beaches, sweet people. Some of my friends told me that I need to be careful the Jamaicans can be cruel. I don't know, I haven't met any bad people from Jamaica, but there are bad lots everywhere in the world.

WE LOVE JAMAICA!! And that's not easy to say because I am born in Antigua West Indies. We vacation at Couples Ocho Rios EVERY YEAR. We don't mind the 1to 1 1/2 hr drive to the resort at all it gives you time to acclimate and truly get on Jamaica time!

Go to Jamaica. Once you go you know!!

Jah Mon...Jamaica Marc here! I go every year and spread around my joy to Mobay, Ochie, Port Antonio and even Kingston. I've been vacationing there for over 10 years and plan to acquire a retirement home there in the next few years.

Check out my friend's place for rent at: www.jamaicadreams.com

Mike Pickersgill is his name and he's the best host on the island. You can email him at: shoreham@cwjamaica.com

Shoreham Green Villa in Port Antonio is awesome and you could not find a better place to stay on the island!

Jamaica Marc out!
