Jet, 5 hours, cost between 300 and 1500 coach
Car 2 1/2 days, but can be done in 40 or so hours if you drive straight thru, haul azz, stop fuel and go. Dana Point CA to Richmond VA 2650 miles.

It took me 6 hours to fly across the country. It took me three days to drive halfway cross the country.

My gf and I did it back in 1994 when we graduated college. Rented a car (didn't want to put 10000 miles on either of ours), and headed out from CA. We were gone 30 days, and spent about $6,000 in all. Sure was fun ... and worth it.
