hmm what about a good wallet??
Make it interesting...I did this for my fiance!
Once I made a little card for him to keep in his wallet. On one side it had a picture of me that I knew he especially liked, which I printed off the computer. On the other side I wrote him a little note telling him that whenever he was upset, pissed off, or just stuck in traffic, to remember that I loved him. I took 2 pieces of hard capco plastic that is used to cover books (I had a work-study job at the library in college) and used them to "laminate" it. He loved it and still keeps it in his wallet!
Then add a calling card where he can call u..
Well, you can make it caring, interesting and a very thoughtful gift by dressing it up a bit. First get different gift cards from various places and place them in the wallet like credit cards. Then, get a picture of the two of you together and put it where the license would go. Make some cute little coupons out of index cards such as: get out of an argument for free; free kissing card; back rub; etc and put them where the money goes. Either that, or in addition to that, you could make fake money that can buy things like a foot massage or their favorite dinner. Then make a business card that has your name, number, etc. on it. On the bottom print "anytime you need someone to talk to or to comfort you call..." Make sure to make up a cute profession like "loving girlfriend" or something. You can load the wallet up with these things and when he first opens it he'll think “oh a wallet,” but imagine how surprise he’ll be to see what’s inside!
u could also do some thoughtful things like....
Buy an inexpensive decorative jar or container. Then buy 365 Hershey Kisses, one for every day of the year. On the Hershey paper tabs, write one thing you like, love, or appreciate about your significant other, and only allow them to have one each day for a year. It takes some time and thought, but they will think of you with every daily kiss. This is a great idea when distance is involved, but works wonders at home too.
OR
For Valentine's Day, I really wanted to do something amazing for my boyfriend. I cut out 100 construction paper hearts, and I wrote I love you in 100 different languages on one side of each and a reason why I love him on the other side. I stringed these around and across his room with fishing wire so that they looked like they were floating.
bought a key, just a plain key, with no cuts in it. I then took it to an engraving store, and got them to engrave on it, "KEY TO MY HEART." I wrapped up the key, along with a letter just telling him how much I love him, and to hold this key forever, ‘cause no matter where I am, part of me will always be with him, forever!
Okies...hope it helped...sorry friend,my fingers hurt!
Best of luck!! Just run ur imagination and do it with time and heart

You can impress your flame with some love funologies. Wouldn’t that be some love-ly Valentine’s Day gift ideas ? And if you’re not among the luckier ones and have a distance to conquer to get in touch with your loved ones, just tell them how much you’re missing them on Valentine’s Day. You can send some virtual gifts his/ her way or you can ship a gift of your choice over the seas to be delivered sharp on February 14. But remember, nothing surpasses a hug when it comes to Valentine’s Day gifts. This isn’t something money can buy, nor does it run the risks of over-usage or the disgrace of becoming cliché. May be that’s what makes them more precious. Hugs can convey things which perhaps no other material Valentine’s Day gift can. So hold your loved ones close to you and give them a sweet squeeze on this sweet occasion of Valentine’s Day. Speak your heart out as best as you can, say ‘I Love You’ as many times you want, hug your dear ones as much as you can and make them feel warm all over as soon as you can with wonderful gifts and gift ideas !

How about just a traditional night out: dinner and a hotel? A night away from the norm is always nice. One thing I did for my husband one Valentine's Day was create a word find of all the things I love about him, he's nuts about word finds and puzzles. Good luck!

You're right about not being too early -- probably a few days after New Year's the displays are going to go up.
Is there anything that he's said he really wants and haven't purchased for himself yet? Listen to him and just watch him -- he'll tell you.

Does your paper run ads for Valentines?
I left notes and clues for him to find things and then at the end i had him buy a paper and search for his name. I left a message in the paper for him.
If your paper does do that for valentine's give it try. He had fun lol and loved it. He carries the piece of paper in his wallet.

how about something classic like a romantic dinner and then going to the theatre or something?
or you can buy him one of those experience gifts, such as a helicopter ride for 2, or hot air balloon ride, or something like that
have a nice day! :)
