As a vector image (Illustrator) you will need to save as a gif or png. If you are doing a photo like image (photoshop) you should save as jpg or png.

If you want a clean flat looking edge use Illustrator.

It would be because you've saved it as a wrong format. For the internet you could only save it as jpg, gif and png. If it's for a website display it's most safest to save it as jpg.

JPG rasterize your artwork. Which means it will become an image and would be displayed on other's screen the way it is displayed on your screen. GIF uses an index colour and sometimes it can make things appear pixelated.

=] make sure you have the resolution set to 72 dpi and the colour mode to be RGB for a web ready image

Good luck with that =D

Illustrator is a vector based graphic program... lines are saved as coordinates instead of a series of pixels. The internet will require a pixel based graphic you just need to save at a higher resolution. If the image looks like crap to begin with it's not going to get any better when you save it.
