In Japanese cuisine, sushi is a food made of vinegared rice combined with various toppings or fillings, which includes seafood and can also include vegetables, mushrooms, eggs or—although not traditionally—meat. Sushi toppings may be raw, like most fish; cooked; blanched; or marinated.
Sushi as an English word has come to refer to the complete dish (rice together with toppings); this is the sense used in this article. The original term Japanese: 寿司 sushi (-zushi in some compounds such as makizushi), written with kanji (Chinese characters) refers to the rice, not the fish or other toppings.[1]
Outside of Japan, sushi is often misunderstood to mean only clumps of rice topped with raw fish, or to refer to other raw-seafood dishes, such as sashimi (sushi and sashimi are considered distinct in Japan).
There are various types of sushi. Sushi served rolled in nori (dried sheets of laver, a kind of pressed and dried alga) is called maki (rolls). Sushi made with toppings laid onto hand-formed clumps of rice is called nigiri; sushi made with toppings stuffed into a small pouch of fried tofu is called inari; and sushi made with toppings served scattered over a bowl of sushi rice is called chirashi-zushi, or scattered sushi.

Sushi is delicious!
Normally it's raw or sometimes lightly cooked sea creatures rolled up in rice. Don't let the thought of eating raw fish make you queasy, it will not taste like you think, it's good! Sushi is served with soy sauce and wasabi, which is sort of like horseradish but it's green and will clear you sinuses if you use too much.
If you are unsure about ordering just tell the server/sushi bar chef that you are trying sushi for the first time and they will totally hook you up with the most tastiest of treats.
Careful sushi is highly addictive!

The most succulent and divine, delightful Japanese cuisine you will have the pleasure of consuming. It's a generic term for raw fish and vinegared rice with various toppings or stuffed items from veggies to fish, fish eggs, usually rolled in seaweed. Sashimi is simply raw fish, and therein lies the difference. Try it once and you'll be hooked for life!

Sushi means vinegar or (seasoned) rice. It's a type of japanese food. It doesn't neccessarily mean raw fish. It's a very good dietary food. It's very healthy. If you never had it, you should start by trying out the vegetable roll or california roll. They are for the starters. It doesn't contain any raw fish.
