How do You "pardon" a man for something which was neither a crime, nor an unconscionable action. Gerald Ford had the RIGHT to chose to pardon Richard Nixon, (something to do with the Laws of the Land, the Constitution, and some other pieces of paper that meant a lot to Him). He exercised His Executive Privilege, which is basically the same as The Queen of England's "Prerogative Writ". If You challenge His power to grant a pardon, then You must also advocate for a redrafting of all the relevant laws and associated Articles of Incorporation. You may not agree with His actions, You may not like His decision, but You can neither change history nor attempt to understand it if it happened at a time, and in a place before Your birth.

I'm assuming you're asking if Gerald Ford should be FORGIVEN for pardoning Nixon. He had the legal right to pardon whomever he wanted, so he doesn't need to be pardoned for that.

Honestly, I think he took one for the team (the team being the U.S.). He knew that it would mean the end of his presidential aspirations to pardon Nixon, but he wanted to get the country moving forward and thinking about the future. I probably would have voted against him for it (if I were able to vote then), but in retrospect, I completely agree it was the right thing to do. And I'm a Democrat!

Rest in peace, President Ford.

Gerald Ford did what he thought was best for America. He put his own head on the chopping block to do it. He did not pardon Nixon to help Nixon out, he did it to protect America. After Viet Nam, then Watergate... can you imagine the world-wide spectacle that would have been present had the former President Of the United States been put on trial? What may have come out on the witness stand? They both lost their careers.. They have now either received or not their ultimate pardons.

What is to pardon? He did what he thought was best for the country. With a war still going on and a President just resigning, is a long, drawn out trial and appeals what the country needed?

I am not excusing what Nixon did. However, with the timing and the division that existed in our country at that time, a trial would have just made the division greater.

Yes. If a Democrat had done something as bad as Nixon did and his successor was a Democrat he would have done the same thing Ford did. It's called Party loyality.

No need. He had the legal authority to issue that pardon.
