It won't fire. The 1489 code is because I swapped the fan relay w/the ASD relay, hoping it would fire. No such luck.

it sounds like a problem in the distributor. several possibilities can cause it.
1. cap is bad, may have been cracked, or corrosion on the terminals or a bad coil or bad wire(s).
posible solutions: change cap and wires.
replace coil.
2. timing is off
have timing checked.
3: may have jumped time, have distributor timing at number one plug reset. rare occurrance, but possible, though not likely.
4: wires are in incorrect locations. firing order for wires is a group of numbers either on top or near intake manifold. start with wire one hook to number one plug and post on distributor cap. in clockwise order, follow each wire to its designated plug starting at distributor position to the next number which designates the cylinder plug. cylinders are numbered odd on one side, even on the other, from front to back. you can call an auto supply to find out which side the number one plug is on. from the front it will be either on the right, like gm cars, or on the left, as with ford cars.
if on right (driver side) the cylinders on that side are 1,3,5,(7) with 2,4,6,(8) on the left side (passenger side).
4: to check sparkplugs for spark, if you didn't do it this way, remove plug number one wire, using a metal screwdriver with plastic or rubber handle, place screwdriver in plug hole, hold metal part of screwdriver close to, but not touching, the metal on the engine while some one cranks the engine for a few seconds. if you touch the engine the spark won't happen, but it should if you hold it about 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch away. if no spark, start with checks before this to isolate problem and repair it.

you would be well advised to buy a repair manual for your car at an auto supply. it will guide you in all kinds of repairs you may want to do yourself. it will have all you need from simple fixes, to major overhauls. has engine specs and torque settings for all necessary nut and bolts which have to be torqued to a specific tightness as the manufacturer requires.
good luck!
