Which state is better for me (+roomate) to relocate to at 18? I know Cali is wayyy more expensive, but does higher pay make up for it? I'm looking at San Fran., California and Orlando, FL, but I'm flexible. Can anyone tell me the best (low crime, cheaper rent, etc) cities in each state for a young renter? As for careers, I haven't decided and my roomate is probably going to be a carpet installer (please don't think of this as ghetto, lol). So, which state is better overall, which cities? Any extra info is also greatly wanted!

I grew up in Cali and have been to Flor many times as well. Weather in Florida is like central/southern Cali except they'll get short afternoon thunder boomers in the warmer months. Anytime you choose to live in a large city you'll have to contend with some degree of criminal activity. (My opinion) SF if a fairly 'clean' city which makes it deceptive. (It tends to look safer than it really is). On the other hand, there is so much to see and do there! (and they have a great public transit system in place). Flor will have slightly warmer weather year round and again, city equals criminal activity of some sort. Orlando reminds me of Anaheim but I thinks it's because of Disney World. (humm). Probably not a whole lot of difference or at least not enough to worry about when it comes to carpet installation.

The SF Bay Area offers higher pay because the cost of living is higher there. That's why you might get paid $12 an hour ($8 any place else) and pay $1200 for a Efficiency ($700 some where else).

I think Orlando is slightly cheaper when looking at the cost of living myself.

You should contact or look up on-line each cities 'Chamber of Commerce'

They can provide you with all the statistic's you need.

San Francisco is basically a Northeastern city (albeit with a glorious, nature-filled backyard). It's move, move, move...work, work, work. The people are workaholics and there's a lot of money flowing through the place. The pace of life can be stressful, but an ambitious person thrives in that kind of environment. Of course, despite the compassionate liberal rethoric, a person who isn't successful is pretty much thrown on the street to fend for himself. Perhaps one grim statistic that illustrates this point all too well: San Francisco has the most billionaires in America, it also has the most homeless people in America. It's a city of both extreme wealth and poverty.

Orlando is more laid-back and easy-going. But it's not as upwardly mobile as California. The jobs just aren't as good in terms of benefits, wages, and pensions. However, at least you can get and hold onto one. If you're comfortable with the idea of being working class and simply paying the bills... why slug it out in the majors? Orlando is the perfect place to live a mediocre, but settled and leisurely lifestyle. That's why all the retirees go to Florida.

Kevin;

I live near San Francisco, and have only visited Orlando, but here are my thoughts;

I live near San Francisco because I can't afford to live IN San Francisco. San Francisco has one of the highest costs-of-lving in the United States, with housing costs leading the reasons. The average apartment would be AT LEAST 50% higher than a similar apartment in the Orlando area. Then, the cost of gasoline is the highest in the entire state of California, and most of the rest of the nation's urban areas. Car insurance rates suck, and the city is not automobile-friendly, so they make life hell for anyone who has to commute and has to own a car. If you can do without, it has a pretty good public transit system and is a compact city that is easily commuted in.

Crime rates are average --for urban centers in California-- (much less than the shooting gallery in the East Bay in the Oakland/Alameda County area, probably second only to ghetto parts of Los Angeles for street crime and murder rate. )

Rate of pay: Well, San Francisco passed its own minimum wage law. January it will be $11.00 per hour; but try and buy rent and groceries for minimum wage in the City? Good luck. Employment rate is about average, but for a carpet layer, you are competing with all the illegal aliens, which the government (city, state and feds ) just close their eyes to. Good luck there, too !

Hint: check out craigslist.com , for both San Francisco, Orlando, and other cities in both Florida and California, to get an idea of rents, jobs, and other statistics. It will at least give you a starting place for comparisons.

Good luck,

John B.,

Maybe somebody else can give you a briefing on Orlando. Their local chamber of commerce can give you average rents and Florida state employment statistics for that county.

I am sure that other parts of California are less expensive to live in, and are better for someone relocating from the East. Check out at least the suburban areas around the state.

San Francisco, CA and Orlando, FL have nothing in common, so I'm having a hard time figuring out your priorities. Neither city is particularly low on crime or inexpensive to live in, though I suspect you could afford a small place near Orlando on both your incomes.

Good Luck and Happy New Year!

not extremely confident, Florida does have an inclination to entice the retirement team while California receives a youthful crowd. Florida at present's affected by proprietor of a house insurance gouging and triple develop in sources taxes, extra human beings are shifting out than in for the first time in a large number of years. So i'd kind of expertise that California is the position to be.

Florida. Remember when the postal abbreviation for California used to be Calif. We said that stood for Come and Live in Florida. I like Holmes Beach.
