Well people and most critics enjoyed it and it made about 40 million so far and for a foreign language film that is not too bad. Plus it is nominated for Golden Globes. I would say at least a modest success

In comparison to the Passion of the Christ, it wasn't as strong although the movie was brillant. But due to the directors (you know the one) screamed anti-semitic rants like sugar **** somehow effected the success of apactalypto.

i think they judge success when they earn more money than they spent on the film..but right now i'm pretty sure its 2nd in earnings right behind the museum movie
