The Time Machine is a novel by H. G. Wells, first published in 1895, first mention of The Eloi and the Morlocks.

Epic of Gilgamesh is probably the earliest mention of a race called "Morlocks". That's also the name of the wooly-boogers in The Time Machine...but not the same bunch, of course.

I'm thinking it was Gilamesh. The Morlocks were a cannible race that Gilamesh encountered on his return to his own kingdom.
