A penny.

Getting a penny is more insulting than giving nothing. When you don't give anything, you can assume lots of things. Maybe they didn't have extra money. But a penny means they went out of their way to let you know they disliked your service.

I was very attentive to a table on a Sunday lunch shift. Their kids kept on throwing rice and chips on the floor. Their ticket was substantial, but not enough customers to grat. At the end of the meal they left me a 2$ tip on 100.00 with a "Here's your tip" card about Jesus. The payer told me the service was great but he couldn't tip as good as he "tides"(gives to the church). I was not thrilled.

A woman put three pennies on the table as she was leaving of my brothers table as she got up. She asked if he knew what they represented..and then preceded to state that the first penny represented that she knew he was an independent and free spirited person, He answered that she was correct, the second penny, she stated, said that he had never been married, he again told her she was correct, then she pushed the third penny forward and said that it represented that his mother also never married.
