You didn't say how old you are, or how responsible you are. I personally think that cell phones are a must for just about everyone. If you are a driver yet, then having a cell means you have access to help if you are stranded, hurt, or in trouble. Even if you are not driving, having a cell means you can call for a ride when you need one, be available to your parents where ever you are, and again--call for help if you are in trouble. In these times, when young people are being kidnapped and hurt, a cell phone means instant access to parents, police, and emergency services. If I were you, I would outline in writing why you want a cell phone-be practical--you don't want to tell them that you want it because all of your friends have one, or because you want to text message your friends all of the time. You have to show them that they can trust you to not go over your minutes, to stick to the plan, to not use it during class time, to keep track of it and not loan it out. That you won't call at peak air time all of the time--mobile to mobile is usually free...The best way to convince them is to show them how useful it would be for THEM if you have one. And let them know you will pay for it, of course. Show them you can be responsible--no late night chat sessions with the girls--no downloading ringtones...those add up, too.

Reason with your dad, that if you are ever abducted by a child molester or in a really bad situation that it could come in handy. Guys, especially dads like to see themselves as protectors of their families. Appeal to that side of him. That it is a tool in an emergency. Try this line "Dad, I'm not just thinking socially - think about all of the possible bad things that could happen and that what if I need to call you or 911? They can actually trace the tower that the call came from. It could save my life."
Then make up a story about your friend named Lisa that was almost raped by a guy on the football team at a neighboring school but thought fast enough to grab her cell phone and call 911. All she got out was her location before he smashed it on the floor, but the police got there before anything irreversible happened.

This should work.

Maybe you can get a pay as you go phone.
You could use the for emergence arguement, Like a date that went bad.
You could agree that you would tell them were you are if they call.

Take them to the Virgin Mobile website.
I've had the service for nearly 5 years and LOVE it.
It's pay as you go, or plan based, with extremely good rates and plans.

well maybe they just think you aren't ready, if you do a sport or something and need to call home a lot, bring that up and maybe you can persuade them.
if they think you are mature enough you will probably get one
