No, it's not true, he died of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), which was later called Lou Gehrig's disease because he is one of the first ,and certainly the most famous to have been diagnosed with it at the time when they figured out what it was.

Yes. He died in 1941. In 1942 a movie (starring Babe Ruth) called "Pride of the Yankees" came out in tribute to Lou Gehrig. He was 37 when he died.
