President Jimmy Carter, perhaps thinking him a misguided idealist, pardoned Collazo in 1979.

Carter gave the pardon to lend support to the anti capital punishment groups. That he may have been a misguided idealist is no defense. Hitler, Lenin, Mao and today's cowardly Islamic terrorists may also be misguided idealists, but that in no way reduces their culpability. Collazo should have died in prison. His pardon, and all those others who are sentenced to life in prison instead of the more appropriate death sentence being carried out, sends a clear message to those who favor the death penalty. Life in prison for heinous crimes in stead of death is meaningless, because LIFE in prison does not mean Life in prison.

Mostly because he had spent over 20 years in prison for his ill-planned assault on Blair House in an attempt to kill President Truman to draw attention to the Puerto Rican national;ists.

Truman had commuted Collazo's sentence from death to life imprisonment. Carter merely took the next logical sterp.
