The power steering on my 1986 Astro Van is leaking, and I don't want to go broke till I get it fixed. I have always heard transmission fluid and power steering fluid are the same thing. Is this true? Transmission fluid is a lot cheaper.

Some manufacturers use ATF. Some do not.

GM is one of the do-nots.

Never, ever put ATF in a non-ATF PS system and god forbid don't mix ATF and PS fluid.

No. Transmission fluid and Hydralic fluid are the same thing. Sorry but power steering fluid is kind of its own thing. Try using a cheaper brand like valucraft or something. Or you can try to find the leak and see if it is the hose or a loose clamp or what.

Fixing the leak may be cheaper than buying either.
You can get away with using ATF in some power steering systems, but it usually makes them wear our sooner.
Then you'll have an even higher repair bill.
