I was just using my Dell laptop and had it plugged into the wall when suddenly it went dim and the battery usage indicator came on. I checked to make sure the outlet was working, and that everything was connected and plugged in correctly and it was. Now it is only running off of the battery and I do not understand why it will not run of the plug in and charge my battery! Any idea, suggestions? Help!

I know this sounds stupid, but I don't know what type of laptop it is besides a Dell haha. I did check the outlet and its fine, I tried plugging the computer in to other outlets as well and it's just not working. Ugh this is frusturating.

What kind of Dell is it? Does the adaptop have the power light on?

I would unplug the power adapter from the wall and the laptop for a few minutes. Try a different wall outlet.

On the bottom of your laptop, there should be a "Service tag" number. Goto http://support.dell.com and enter that service tag number. It should tell you exactly what you have.

Another thing you can do is completely remove the battery and plug the laptop into the wall and see if it works. If it does, it is probably the battery. If it doesn't, it is the charger or something on the motherboard.

MAKE SURE you leave it unplugged for about 5 minutes, and make sure the little LED on the power block turns off. Then try it again. Check the Pins in the laptop, where the plug goes in, and check the pins in the adaptor, the thing that plugs into the laptop. If any of them are bent, it is time to replace that part.

Listen to the power supply, and if you hear a high pitched non-continuous sound this means your power adapter is okay, but the cable between the adapter and the laptop is not working.

I have the same problem now.. does anyone know how to open a Dell Laptop Power Supply.. of course, this might leave me with no warranty..

First, the obvious ... will other things (that you **know** are working) work when they're plugged into the same outlet? If not, consult an electrician and have the outlet checked.

Assuming the outlet is OK, it sounds like your power supply went buns-up. Time for a new one!

Make sure the outlet works first. Second, check the cable for rips. If it's not that, then you've probably got a power unit problem, and will need to buy a new one...Unless it's under warranty, it'll cost you at like $50...

Does the wall outlet have power? Plug in a lamp and see. Does the transformer output the correct voltage? Dirty connector?
