How long would it really take to dissolve skin?

I work in a chemistry lab and deal with HF, HCl, HNO3, and other acids. A co-worker and I were discussing the acid sceen in Saw 3 and were wondering if that scenario would even be feasible?

At what Conc., N, temp or what type of acid would be needed to produce such an actual effect?

Could any acid that exists actually dissolve your skin/other tissues on contact? And as mentioned above, then what type, conc, and N would be needed?

A mixture of Chromic-Sulfuric acid (Chromerge) can dissolve organics fairly quickly, simple stuff like paper can dissolve instantly. Other, more complicated things though can take days to dissolve completely. Aquarega (2parts conc HCl: 1part conc HNO3) is it's inorganic dissolving counterpart. Both of these solutions are concentrated mixtures.

Acids can have different effects on the body. HCL and Nitric and sulfuric acid can burn or even dissolve the skin. HF is a calcium seeker, it doesn't bother the skin but dissolves the calcium in the bone. If the body creates acid it can lower the ph of the blood and kill you or hurts your eyes. This is what happens when you drink methanol

You, working in a chemical lab need to know that the disassociation of acids, the " giving up " of a H proton is what is doing the damage. The Saw 3 movie is just that, a movie, so acids burn somewhat analogous to heat burns. Except HF, hydrofluoric acid. It penetrates the skin to a depth, before it disassociates. This is the bad one, the one talked about when acid burns are mentioned. And it is common in industrial use. So, caution.

Dang.

It depends on the acidity of the acid. Hydrochloric acid is the most acidic, and can dissolve skin. Less acidic acids (more basic) don't dissolve as quickly as hydrochloric acid.
