Would it be okay to keep two pet rats in a plastic rubbermaid container that measures 36Lx16Wx13H ? i know that the container is large enough, but is it chewproof? i would provide good ventilation. my only question is, is a rubbermaid container escape-proof?

i have no cats or dogs or any other potentially dangerous pet.

I WILL PROVIDE ADEQUATE VENTILATION

In the rat fancy we call these renovated tote cages hospital cages, quarantine cages, or transport cages.

No, they are not a good cage for permanent housing. It's not big enough. I have found that due to a lack of ventilation the rats can over heat, sweat, and then humidity builds up inside the cage. This is not healthy for the rats. Whatever ventilation you make, if the rat can get their teeth in any hole they will chew it big enough to escape. The totes are confining, sound-proof. They make it hard for the rat to socialize with you, and some rats are claustrophobic. They really want to get out of that cage when this happens.

They are absolutely *not* chew proof or escape proof. From personal use I would say they are a pain in the butt except for housing sick rats who don't have the inclination to want to climb or chew and who need their food and water close at hand. And I even rotate a sick rat from a tote to a barred cage every three days.

Ventilation aside, rats are curious and love to look around at stuff. Mine live in a rubber coated cage that was cheap at the pet store. rats are pretty cool pets. give them lots of toys, and check out a thing called Timber Hideaway at the the pet store. good luck.

I had a rat for a few years, and let me tell you, they chew A LOT. She chewed so many of my things. I would definately say it would be better to buy a cage. It is very important that you keep it clean because they will get sick if you dont. I dont know if a container would be safe for them. Good luck.

Your dimensions sound rather small, and i think they will be quite cramped in there. I have two mice in a 50x25x40 cage, and honestly believe two rats will be quite cramped in there. As to whether they can chew through it, i really don't know. Depends on the thickness of the container.

It's not chew proof no, can you not get a proper house for them? Atleast get a one floor cage for them and make sure its a plastic bottom, but remember they love multi levels so im sure you can make you're own if you're tight on money.
