Search for something that could cause the smell such as a dead mouse. Even look in the attic for something that it could be. Also if the closet is carpeted, smell the carpet and if it stinks it could be that someone had an animal go on that carpet, so cleaning it will help with the smell. Keep trying to cover up the smell with comercial air freshners if all else fails.

I'm assuming you've looked for obvious external sources for the odor and come up empty. If it's immediately below the attic, go up there and check if there is a dead squirrel in the closet area or something that got in from a tree or wire attached to the house. It may have gone down into the vertical walls and died, which means you'll need to remove plaster/drywall to find and eradicate it. Start by cutting a small opening at the bottom with a keyhole saw or saws-all.

a dead mouse can be right infront of a person in plain site and not be seen, but the smell is horrible...had that experience once and looked around the house for an hour before i found it...on--ON TOP of the coffee table, the cat had left a "present"....

Are they cedar closets or just a piece of carpet and normal flooring? Use carpet shampoo and frebreze but if that doesn't work replace the carpeting. Its most likely only the flooring that is the problem but you could paint the walls too.

before you purchased house, did you get a home inspection, done by a professional.. this would find issue and stuff that were not mention , and things that were not found, maybe be paid for and resolve by the previous owner.
It could be mold, a dead rat behind the wall, etc...
check out source link to home inspection check list..

Can you possibly ask the old owners what that could be? It may be a mouse or rat dead in the walls.
