Discharge can have a variety of causes, or it can be completly normal. Why are you asking on a site like this instead of asking a doctor? You shouldn't be worried, if you don't want to see your GP or practice nurse then you can go to a local well woman clinic or sexual health (GUM) clinic. These would be listed in phone directories.
It's the same procedure for taking a swab as it is for a smear test, in that a warmed speculum is inserted carefully into your vagina so a swab resembling a cotton bud can be wiped over the skin high in your vagina. This is sent to the lab and you get results in a few days and a prescription for antibiotics if needed. Its all totaly confidential. (sorry if I'm teaching grandma to suck eggs, but you don't indicate your age or whether you've had swabs done before.)

Without knowing details like texture, itchiness, and odour, I'm not going to give any sort of firm diagnosis.
If it's viciously itchy, you need one tablet and soap - and - water.
The most common reason for thick, yellow discharge, which is horribly itchy, is a simple 'yeast infection'. This is a bit of a misnomer. It's actually an overgrowth of naturally occurring fungus called 'candida', or 'monilia', or 'candidiasis'.
It doesn't only grow in female privates -- the digestive tract, from mouth to the other end, is also a nice place to grow a crop of candida.
If you have been on antibiotics recently, they kill the bacteria which normally eat the candida, keeping them in check. This is the most common reason for women developing vaginal candidiasis, with stress coming in a close second. Tight knickers and trousers make things worse. Candida likes a warm, moist, environment.
If you have been eating a drastic amount more sweets than usual, well, candida love sugar, and will tend to overgrow. That's when it tends to attack the digestive tract. Is your tongue coated with thick, yellow gunk? If so, you have full-body candidiasis. This is also called 'thrush'. Icky, but fantastically treatable: Two tablets of fluconazole will kill the overgrowth off. You can buy this over the counter at the chemist's.
If it is NOT itchy, runny rather than thick, or has a strong odour, you have other problems. See gynaecologist. Do not pass GO. Do not collect £100.
Under NO circumstances engage in any sort of sexual activity. Blokes know all about fungal infections (called 'jock-itch', in the States, dunno about here) of the privates. No fun. If unsure about full-body thrush, oral-sex could transmit.
Meanwhile, wear loose, cotton knickers. You may want to use pantiliners. Change them frequently. Loose, cool, and dry are environments that are less growth-friendly.
Eat yoghurt -- not the sugary kind, the health-food acidophilus and bifidus kind. You can apply it topically, to control itching, if you've let the infection get out of hand. For full-body thrush, a diet of yoghurt, with yoghurt, and also yoghurt... and ZERO sugar, is especially helpful.
DON'T SCRATCH. You'll just spread whatever it is.
Wash a lot. Do not use harsh soaps, and avoid anti-bacterial soaps. This is one time bacteria are your FRIEND.
Don't worry. Stress makes all such complaints worse.
----
BTW, to those of you who replied with 'No thanks', ROFLMAO. Not helpful, but very funny.

If you're taking about the female anatomy.. sometimes women on the pill do miss a period and the slight yellow discharge is just a sign that there may be a temporary hormonal imbalance.

It's usually nothing to worry about; discharging yellow fluid is the female equivalent of getting an erection. When a woman gets sexually excited, she discretes yellow fluid from her vagina.
And to the rest of you, stop being so immature. I'm 16 and I'm more grown up than you.

No thanks. Nice of you to offer though.
Could be syphilis, by the way. Then again, it could be something highly insignificant. Best get it professionally looked at. Don't panic or be embarrassed - the docs are there to help.
Good luck.

maybe you should go to your doctor and see what it could be because you don't want to wait too late and it turns up to be something wrong, it's better to catch something earlier then late
