In a way, you are correct. The current 'qwerty' keyboard was set up early in the history of the typewriter. The characters above the numbers were rarely used in those days (1860's), so they were put out of the way where the typist wouldn't be slowed down.

Perhaps it's time to rethink the modern electronic keyboard to replace the old mechanical limitations.
