there is no official language of the united states. it is not set up in the constitution. Any provision setting up an official language would be easier to pass and ratify in a state constitution.

Because if we don't have an official language we will all be speaking Spanish in the next 20 years. Illegal Immigration will cause the Hispanics to be the majority by the year 2045. If you would rather for this stop, call, write or e-mail your Rep or Sen and tell the to stop Illegal Immigration NOW. Mexicans have predicted they will control our 7 Southwestern States and they are doing it now. There are over 20 million Illegals here now with about 3,000 more crossing our borders every day. Let our government know we want this to stop. You can help. It just takes some effort.

This could only happen if the population of the state which speaks a different language is large enough to petition for a change of official language status.

Because they're afraid that all of a sudden all the road signs will turn into Spanish and everyone will get confused and end up hitting each other. So they've decided to cement English in as the official language. Es cierto.

They may see it as a move to protect a part of what they feel is at risk. The bigger picture would suggest that it is a fear without much merit. Look at New York City, a place with so many speakers of foreign languages. . .and still even with the many accommodations that the city gives, in order to "do well" people have to communicate in basic English.

English is the official language in Hawaii and it is in our Constitution as such. People who do not want to learn our official language, just as I would have to learn the official language of Mexico, they can go back home. PERIOD.

I think a bunch of people nationwide have come to this "it's time for a change" concept. Fine, but must they be knit picky about it? It was fine before. I don't mind change of anything if there is a solid reason. Things such as the issue your question poses are like people arguing over what color to paint the white stripes in streets. You see my point?

I'm a liberal and southamerican (the term hispanic doen't make it for me)but I think is really stupid to define the official language of the US, I mean, every body knows is english, it's stupid, I don't get it. But for the girl that wrote "they should speak american", you are a poster girl for the cliche of the idiot american, there is not such think as a language called american is "ENGLISH", mexicans don't speak mexican, they speak SPANISH. My god, they need to speak "american" as much as you need to finish grammar school.

They are trying to bring uneducated republicans to the polls. Nothing does that like a good old english-only ballot initiative.
