As you said, its your daughter that wants to have a boy/girl party. I have three almost grown children, 2 boys and a girl, and I can tell you the girls are much more interested in this at 12 then the boys are. But, the boys will come regardless.

You didn't specify if this was a birthday party or just general entertainment, but either way she is looking to try her hand at a more mature activity, hence the boys. One way of keeping it hip, mature and fun all at the same time is to go with a theme. I don't know what your timeframe is, but there are a few good events that can be matched with themes coming up including the Hollywood award shows, St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day and Mardi Gras. The St. Valentine's Day could be tricky since it is more geared toward romance so I would stay away from that one. Mardi Gras could be really a lot of fun since it is all about having a good time and there are lots of activities and foods to match with it. In addtion there are themes that can be used at anytime.

First, the key to making a party hip and fun is to set the scene. It is important to make sure the kids are immersed in the concept or its just a bunch of kids hanging around in the basement or family room eating chips and dip. They need to be transported to a different place that just happens to be right in your home. This can be done easily with the right party supplies. A recently introduced product called the "scene setter" is bascially disposable wall paper (no glue, just tape or tack) that completely transforms any room acording to the theme you choose. Add overlays, danglers, centerpieces, cut-outs, pinatas and other decor items and you won't believe the room is in your house.

Second, you need activities that will match the theme. And I'm not talking about pin the tail on the donkey, although I am sure that the kids will be happy to play a few rounds of flashlight tag. These activities keep them from falling into the awkward silence mode or the boy/girl seperation that your daughter will dread.

Lastly, some themes support a certain dress or even costume opportunities. This is obviously an optional element, but it can really bring all of the guests into the concept and keep everyone engaged. If you spend enough effort to dress a certain way or wear a costume, your invested, and no one wants to waste their investment.

Here are some theme suggestions and specific ideas for each.

Hollywood or American Idol - These themes have plenty of decor and party patterns available, the Hollywood theme especially. Obviously, one snack item on the menu would definitely be popcorn and movie box candies. I suggest you use nostolgic movie popcorn boxes to serve the popcorn in. Scene setters with life size overlays of Marilyn Monrow, Elvis Presley and such are available. Some activities could be talent contests or staging your own awards ceremony. I would recommend against scheduling on the night of an actual award show, but the night before would be good. This also has a costume opportunity as people could dress like their favorites stars and you could have a contest.

Mardi Gras is a lot of fun and of course it helps to guide your menu, music and dress if you want to be authentic. Gumbo, Jumbalya, corn bread, Andoulle, etc. Mardi Gras is definitely a masquarade party, the masks and beads being most important. For music, its New Orleans Jazz which after a while I am sure the kids will change in favor of more youthful populism. Here general games and contest will do, but a contest for the best mask is in order and you could a have a mini float parade as well.

Luau is good year round. Leis, grass skirts, coconut bras, hawain shirts, flip-flops, and tropical drinks (non-alcoholic of course). Music is avaliable, but I sure it will be transformed during the party. The Limbo stick and dancing are definite activities at this one. Grilled foods and citrus fruits are the fare.

A few more that go along with the suggestions above include a Rock-n-Roll theme (that might go well with American Idol as well), South-Western or Cinqo De Mayo, Casino (which has lots of activity opporunities) and sports (the Super Bowl is coming).

when my daughter was 12 (she is 15 now), we did a party that we played bingo. It seemed corny but it was a hit. we gave away fun, baby-like gifts that both the boys and the girls thought were funny. We had a back up plan that included other games (pictionary, scattegories, etc.) but bingo was plenty. The kids ate pizza then played bingo then went home. We got a lot of brownie points for the party. btw, I played the part of bingo caller and that kept daughter and mommy from arguing about the process.
