Bleach it out after collection. Wrap your garbage before you put in the bin (plastic bags), buy a inexpensive gasket for lid to seal the lid (weather stripping rubber foam works).

The very first thing you should do is empty the garbage can completely. Once that is done, wash the can out with HOT water, soap and bleach, make sure to scrub the outside of the can as well. Put the can in an area where it can air dry for a few hours. DO NOT use until it is completely dry on the inside. Before putting in a new liner, spray lightly w/ a 50/50 solution of water and bleach and let dry (don't rinse this time). That should do it. You do have to remember that anytime you throw out things like meat or fish wrappers, your chances of getting maggots again are increased. You have to make sure that any time you cook with these items, the liner is taken out of the house completely and the can is sprayed again. You're also at a greater risk if you have pets, because the flies are drawn to their waste. Anytime you clean the litter box or clean up the yard after the dog, that waste should be kept in an outside can(I know that's common sense but believe it or not, you do actually have to spell that out to some people). Once the problem is under control, it will be easy to keep under control as long as you remember to clean the can really well once a week or even every other week.

Clean out your garbage bins, and make them airtight. DDT works great but it is no longer sold in the US. Bummer, as it was great stuff.

That is unusual for Winter time, just pour some Mr.Clean in the bottom of your bin.I do it for smell. If that doesn't work, use a little bleach---do you scrub it every time you take out the trash?Good Luck........

get an empty bottle put bleach in it... first empty trash.. them hose trash out... then once its dry flip trash upside down spray with bleach..heavily.. then flip back over and spray the rest of the trash can inside and out.. it clears the scent.. now make sure to tie trash bags and it will help if your trash has a lid.. also empty regularly..another thing you can do is spray the bags... as well once you put them in there
