On w2k and wxp, do a ctrl+alt+del and select task manager.
Select the Performance tab. Under Physical Memory, you should see Total. This is what you have. Available is what you have left.
The bottom chart shows you the PF, what is currently being sent in and out of RAM memory. If it is over your total memory, you must be hating your pc. Don't let that happen.

Go to 'My Computer' and highlight/select your hard drive usually called 'C' drive, to the left under details you should see size, space left etc... there
If you mean memory as in RAM hold ctrl + alt + del on the keyboard all at the same time you should get a window come up click on the 'Performance' tab then you will see details like CPU usage and underneath memory usage.

Click on the icon My Computer..
Click on your main local disk drive icon (c or what ever your local disk drive is)
At the bottom of the window click on properties.
You will now see how much space you have used and how much space you still have left. Keep in mind that this has nothing to do with memory at all. I only point this out as there is much more you can do there as well. You can click on the tab to clean up your disk here,
Now go to the Tools Tab and click on it. Here you can now check for errors and repair them. Then you can also run your DEF from here as well.
If you have done all this you will notice your computer will run faster the next time or two that you start it up.
Now on to memory. This is only what your computer uses while it is turned on. You can download a program called Free Ram XP Pro. http://www.download.com/FreeRAM-XP-Pro/3000-2086-10070530.html?part=dl-FreeRAMXP&subj=dl&tag=button It's a Freeware application to free and optimize your computer's RAM (Random Access Memory), resulting in an increase in system performance and productivity. Automatically configures itself for ease of use and also features advanced options and customizability. FreeRAM XP Pro has been designed to be easy to use yet highly customizable by computer novices and experts alike.
Features and options include:
Automatic, real-time memory monitoring and optimization
Fast, threaded memory freeing with stop option
AutoFree option intelligently optimizes RAM without sacrificing performance
system metric and performance monitors
Advanced tray support
Memory reporting and diagnostic logging
Simple, attractive interface
RAM-cuts (RAM-freeing Windows shortcuts)
Customizable Windows hotkey support
Access to Windows memory-related tweaks that could enhance system performance (new in 1.50)
Process memory usage reporting (new in 1.50)
Unique memory compression technology directly reduces applications' "working set" memory requirements instantly and without swap file usage: completely unlike other memory programs (new in 1.50)
More options and customizability
Now you need to do something with your REG. After a amount of time this builds up with left over files, non working shortcuts ect. You can't locate these as they are hidden files. So, now you should download CCleaner. http://www.ccleaner.com and it is also free. No Pop Ups or aAd Ware at all with either of these programs.
Timev to clean up the rest of your computer. Do all this and your computer will run like a JET!
Last point, to regain your memory you need to end your session. Meaning you need to shut off your computer and re-start it. You will then have your memory back. Do this when your computer seems to get into a crawl.
Good luck and make your computer work the way you want it to..

If you are talking about space on your hard drive, then follow these steps:
1. Click on start, then click my computer
2. Right click the drive you want to check, and hit properties
3. The window that comes up should show you how much space you have left.
