As far as settling most came through the colonies later like the rest of the immigrants, and then Ellis Island. A large community was in New York and the east as well as the midwest. All the above are true but there was also a substantial Italian community in New Orleans before 1900, hence the lynchings of mafia members. You have to get a large community before you get organised crime there.
