My husband And I have always wanted to adopt a child that needed a loving mother and father...we've checked into it and will probably never get to help some poor child have a nice family all because of the cost and the "red tape" you have to go through..It's NUTS! yet almost every day you hear of some mother that has killed or left hr baby in a dumpster to die because she was afraid and thought she couldn't provide for it. when there are people like myself thta would love to care for such a child...
WHY is it so hard to adopt?

There's a 2 fold situation in this...1st they want to see if you can provide a love and SAFE environment for the child. Just because the child will be loved, doesn't mean it's safe and clean. Here's food for thought (nothing against you) but just because a person is a foster parent, doesn't mean their trustworthy, it just mean they haven't got caught and foster parents have messed up in the past, and because of things like that...the red tape and costs in unreal and a royal pain!!! Sometimes I think they make it a pain to see if the couple is going to endure it all, and if they can then they must be pretty worthy. So, in a sense is it worth to go through all that for an unwanted child...if the answer is yes, then GREAT, show them that you'll go through any length to give that child a great family. The 2nd reason for a lot of that red tape is so the biological mother won't later change her mind and try to get her child back. I have known some couples that already knew a girl who was having a baby and didn't want it, so the couple paid all hospital & Dr bills and a few legal fees to get full custody and thats less hassle, but it's good to know the girls lifestyle while she's carring it.

because, alas, some people collect children and keep them in cages... even after all the screening.

It may be a bit more work, but you may wish to talk to your local children's services department: they are the ones that take children from endangered families and most have a constant need for foster parents.

being a foster parent can be very difficult: these children have been through some pretty nasty stuff in most cases, but they are children and as such still have the capability to love somewhere inside them. It is a valuable service to be a foster parent.

And there is a side benefit: in most areas, being a foster parent may allow you preference in adoptions. If you do well as a foster parent, you create a bond with a child that most social service agencies will respect if the child is not returnable to the parents.

even if you are not allowed to adopt a given child, it is a great opportunity for you and your husband to give a child a stable home, even if it is only temporary, and that will help the child for the rest of their life.

Children must be protected, but I agree that it is nuts to have so many obstacles to matching a good home and family with a child wh needs one.
