I have a 3.0 GPA from USC, 5 years of experience in IT consulting (including managing a team of 12 developers), a score of 700 for the GMAT, and I'm fluent in English and in French. I have no idea what kind of school would accept someone with this profile. Should I apply for top 20 or top 40 schools?

Your GPA is a little low for top schools -- but everything else looks good. You should apply to a couple top 40 schools, a few top 20 schools and at least one school that is in the top ten.

The top MBA programs look for many things. They will usually forgive one weakness -- but not two. What you have going for you is a high GMAT score, a degree from a very good university and the right kind of work experience. In order to get into a top school, you need to write killer essays, have a good interview -- and you need to come up with a story about why your GPA isn't higher.

If, for example, you had very high grades in your major or had a really bad first year but did well after that, they may well overlook the overall number and concentrate on the positives.

I have no doubt that you can get into a program ranked between 20-40. I think that with the right spin, you should be able to get into a program ranked higher.
