It's been bugging me for a week now. I won't take any medecines with alcohol in them... and I don't know what to do about it. I can barely sleep, my nose keeps getting stuffy, I have a bad cough, and a sore throat.

# Drink lots of water or juice with Vitamin C.
# Wash your hands after you blow your nose.
# Brush your teeth often to help get rid of germs in your mouth.
# Replace your toothbrush after the cold has passed to keep from getting a cold again.
# Eat. Your body needs fuel to fight colds and infection.
# Take some cold medicine: Benadryl, Nyquil, Dayquil, etc.
# Rest a lot.
# Take a hot bath/shower to clear up nasal passages.
# Chicken noodle soup is helpful, as it clears nasal passages and tastes good.
# Try not to smoke cigarettes.
# Disinfect surfaces if someone who has been sick has been near.
# Stay in bed as much as you can.

The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).

Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.

Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.

There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.

The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

Take Claratin and Nasonex, but see a docter. Also try Cloroseptic Cough Drops. Thats what helps me. Drink orange juice too. Also keep blowing your nose to get rid of all of that. It helps, it allways works for me. I had something like that on Christmas, and I did what i said and it nearly went away as soon as I tried.
