As soon as my kids could sit up with the help of support ie:high chair, I was giving them solid food. Remember : SUPERVISE. The best finger food to start with are those cookies they have for babies that dissolve easily when babies are chewing on it with their gums or just sucking on it. Less chance of choking. Actually, if you consider those mashed carrots or veggies that Gerber has in jars as solid food, at 3 mths my babies had a little added to their bottled formula. That introduced them to different flavors than soy milk - my kids were lactose intolerant.

You did not say how old but the word infant tells me he should not even be eating solid food let alone feeding himself.
