Jealousy, judgmental-ness, selfishness, it's all in other girls feeling insecure or less confident so they want to bring people down.

Boy, would I like to know the answer to that one and I am a woman! I sometimes wonder if it has to do with a primal nature of competition for eligible males so they compete with each other . It would be kind of like the show "Survivor." The people that last through the "cattiness" rise to the top. I think the ones who do not participate are the true noble ones of character. I notice too that men communicate in a completely different way. When I was teaching, I always found myself enjoying the conversation of the men much more although I did not always know their subject matter like sports statistics.

I think it's partly because they're raised to be competitive with one another for male attention and in other areas (like looks, motherhood, meatloaf recipes...you get the idea), rather than focus on career and self-actualization.

The other reason is rampant objectification of women by society. Everywhere they turn, they're told they're worthless unless they look like a model or movie star, put out, and make a perfect home for their family. They are afraid to turn on the thuggish males who put them down (like dating violence and wife-beating, or other abuse), so they turn on each other and sadly, their own kids, after they become parents.

Only the stronger women reject this, but in turn, they are usually rejected by society. If they suceed, they're considered "too masculine". And their behavior is scrutinized much more harshly . For instance, men can swear all they want and it's chalked up to "boys will be boys", but if WOMEN do it, they've "got quite a mouth" or "an attitude" or are called sluts, etc.! They can't win.

Men are "catty" too (gossipy, nosy), but they usually hide it and don't let women know about it. It stays in the locker room or on the street.
