Why is it that they take breaks in shows, more specifically, smallville and lost, and leave you hanging for months then start back up? I mean, I can understand between seasons for a week or two but why right in the middle? and why do they do that and put the most crappy shows on instead of it, knowing that those shows will fail?

I seriously doubt that any decrease in ratings will be enough for them to take the shows off for two months... and besides, I think that they will lose ratings if they take it off, because if they take it off, some people when it comes back on, will completely forget about it or end up liking the new show and not care about the old one anymore...

Actually its because they have not made all the shows yet.
Previous LOST seasons they did a new episode or two and ran 2 or 3 reruns, a new one and a rerun. This time for season 3 they did like 4 or 5 new ones, a whole bunch of reruns and other shows, then in february back to back new episodes till the season is out.

They thought fans would rather see a whole bunch of new episodes back to back, week after week than a new an old a new 2 olds, etc.

Sometimes those crappy shows are some shows they bought, after a few episodes they did not like and then they never aired and so they saved them to be filler shows in cases like the above or incase some other show bombs and they need to finish out their season.

because the ratings go down during the holidays so they wait to put the shows back on when the season is over.

totally a guess

They just want to leave you hanging, because they are afraid you'll stop watching if your not interested. Plus the actors/actresses need time off and to continue with the show.
