I have two compaq computer s that are the same year or about the same year. I was told that I could take the memory out of one of the compaq computers and adding it to the other computer. I took both computers apart and found the memory(or what I think is the memory) and one of the computers have two grey memory card s and the other computer has 3 grey cards of memory. There are no more slots for extra memory so where do I add the memory. Explain it step by step please.

The quick answer is that the memory slots are full. To give your computer more memory, you're going to have to buy bigger RAM sticks. With more capacity, that is!

As for step-by-step info, let me recommend a website that explains it better than I can ... and it should help you out a LOT in figuring out your RAM upgrades.

Crucial.com will give you plenty of help about memory, including your options for installing more on your computer, what parts they have available, how much it will cost, etc. Make sure you use the visit the site using the computer you want to upgrade ... the site can actually check your computer, tell you whether you have any empty slots, how much RAM is in each slot, and what particular upgrades would work for your machine.

The URL, again, is www.crucial.com

Good luck! :-) Have fun, too, because it's a pretty neat site.

Compaq computers have the memory slots on the part that is closest to the top and front of the box. They are usually hard to get to with the CD roms and harddrives installed.
If you can add memory then you could be able to move the hold down levers and the memory would come out.
After that you put memory into the computer by pushing it into place.

Memory however comes in certain sizes usually 256, or 512 is a common install. what is not said is how much memory is in both computers to start with. So id you have 3 slots on one computer I'd bet its got a total memory of maybe 2 256 slots and a 512 slot (for 1gb) or 3 256 sticks for somewhere in the 700's. the other computer may have single 512 or 256 stick, who knows.
So we dont know what setup is good to divide these sticks in good order.

If there are no more available slots for memory, you can't add any more. What you can do, though, is replace lower-capacity memory sticks with higher-capacity sticks.

Just to clarify, this is what ram looks like:
http://home.pacbell.net/dbk4297/memory_what_kind.html

Now, in order to accomplish this maneuver, you have to know the capacity of your ram sticks. Generally, if you have two, they will both be of the same capacity. For example, if your computer has 512MB of ram, and it has two sticks, they will each be 256MB sticks.

So step one is to turn each computer on and determine how much memory it has. Right click on My Computer and click Properties, or type Winkey+Break. The amount of RAM should be in the lower right of that window. Then you would turn off the computers, open them up, and count how many memory sticks they have. This would allow you to determine their capacities, so you could then decide how to divide it up between your two computers.

Note: individual RAM stick capacatities are almost always multiples of 2- e.g. 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB (1GB), and lately 2048MB (2GB).

Note 2: There are several different types of RAM. If you can't fit them into the slots, they are probably incompatible with each other.

First of all if there are no more extra memory card slots left then you cant add any more memory sticks. But you could buy bigger memory card sticks and get more ram out of your slots. For example: instead of having two 512mb sticks of ram, you could get two 1gigabyte sticks of ram and have 2gb of memory instead of the 1 gb you would have with the two 512mb sticks. Note 1gb (gigabyte) = 1024 mb (megabytes). Also computers have limits on how much memory they can have. So it could be possible that your computer may not be able to hold 2 gb of ram. refer to your owners manual.

You can only have as much memory chips as there are slots. make sure the ram are the same model. such as ddr 2800 and take the ones with the largest memory and use those.
