I went into a three year cell phone contract one year ago with two cell phones. I can not afford to pay for my phones anymore because of circumstance which are not in my control.

I can not afford to pay out my contract which would cost around $500 for both phones up front. I can either drop it to the minimum and pay around $30 a month for 2 years and not use my phone, suck it up and use all my money on cellphones or just cut my phone off and take a hit to my credit.

I was really considering taking a hit to my credit, I know collection agencies will be after me but I do not think the company can legaly take the money from me out of my bank account (I don't get direct deposit from work). I am only 19 and was thinking of taking a big credit hit since I can not afford these phones and it is VERY stressful on me to come up with the funds to pay my bills now. My cell phone is pointless anyway.

What do you think I should do?

Here is a site that lets you make a deal with someone who wants service from your company. You may have to pay a little, but not the whole penalty.

Don't mess up your credit!

Yep, you made a deal with the devil, and there's no way that you can win.

If I were you, I would look into your state law and see if there's anyway you can get out of the contract. It might be illegal to force you into a 3 year contract, and if that's the case, you can just cancel at anytime. I don't think there's any service out there that requires you to sign a contract except for an apartment lease, and even then, you can get out of it by forfeiting your deposit.

I think 500 bucks is a little extreme just for canceling your contract.

You can try talking to the cellular company and ask them if there's anyway you can get out of the contract because there are now 1 year contracts, and you fulfilled that already. You can ask them to reduce the penalty. I think the cellular company would rather get a little bit of money from you rather than get no money from you. Not worth their time to get a collection agency to try to collect 500 bucks because it's probably going to cost more than 500 bucks to hire a collection agency.

drop it down tp the lowest accounts, $30 a month abd use the phone for emergency. you do not ever want to mess up your credit, try always to maintain that. Cause when you get bacl on your feet, and you try to get another phone oneday they are goin to ask for 500-1000 deposit. Because you messed up before. So just keep the Phones. It will be best. Just drop to the Lowest plan you can afford. Pre-pais will cost you more than you really know...

it is very strange that you entered into a contract with two, not one, cell phone companies. in addition, being 19, hasn't anyone ever told you to read a contract before you sign it?

if i lived in your skin, i'd pay the minimum per month (meanwhile seeing if i could lower the miniumum) until the contract ceases, on both of them.

yes, the companies can garnish your wages. it doesn't matter if you get direct deposit.

you are going to get a very bad credit rating if you do not live up to your contracts.
