I am just trying to learn to play guitar and I have been looking on the internet at chords and stuff but all averthing shows is tabs and I have no clue how to read this mess. I play piano but I don't know how to read music or anything. Is tabs like reading music because all it looks like to me is numbers on strings. Is there ant web site that will just show me the finger positions to play certain songs or do I need to learn to read this stuff? Im trying to learn wish you were here by pink floyd.

Alright, the 6 lines represent the 6 strings on your guitar, only the top line in tabs is the bottom string on your guitar and vice versa. the numbers tell you which frets to hold. Ex:
-----
-----
-----
-2---
--2--
---4-
This means hold the 6th string on the 4th fret and 5th and 4th strings on the second fret. 6th string is the top string. Each dash represents a beat.

Tabs are very easy , more easier than reading 'Staff' .
Normally in tabs you are shown 6 lines like
e -----------------------
b------------------------
G------------------------
D------------------------
A-------------------------
E-----------------------
these are the 6 strings
then to play a note on any particular string there will be number written in between the dotted line representing the fret you are to press and play that note like
e--------
b-----
G-----
D----------4---
A---1---------
E-0---3--------
this means play open E string then play note on first fret of 5 or A string then play note on 3rd fret on 6th string and so on
if numbers on a tab are shown in a single line without gaps like

e--0--
b--1--
G--2--
D--2--
A--0--
E--x--

it means hold all these notes and strum them together , x means E string will note be played or will be muted

i learned that from guitar section of www.about.com , it has very good lessons to learn the basics of playing guitar including reading tabulature and staff

its easy man , learn it , tabs are like a language of music, if you dont know tabs its like you are mute
and as u progress in playing guitar or any instrument then without tabs or staff it becomes hell difficult to communicate with other musicians

a tablature is a much more definitve way to write music ofr guitar, the sicx vertical lines represent the guitar strings, low e is on the bottom. the #s on the strings represent which fret you play on that string. if they are vertically lined up that means you play them together, eg liek a chord, if they are single notes it means its a single note or part of a riff or solo

Go to e-chords.
It has almost everysong.
Or ultimate guitar tabs.
It has mostly chords but I don't know why they say tabs

go to totaltabs.com there are plenty of songs, and the chords are given to you by rolling your mouse over them. It is a country format, but they also have rock and christian.
