An old timer once did that to me, and I never understood why. His old timer friends just laughed when I shook his left hand. Is it something more to this or am I just tripping.

It was my girlfriend's grandpa, and even she giggled when he extended his left hand to me for the first time we met. It has to be a hidden meaning behind extending your left hand to someone the first time you meet.

The left hand is and always had been considered dirty.
The left hand is the hand that is used to (they say) wipe ones tush after going to the bathroom.
This is considered to be offensive. Never take the left hand of a person. In some cultures this is a VERY bad thing to do and to receive.
This older man new this and should be ashamed, for what ever reason he thought he was being cute....

Only time I would think it would be appropriate is if the mans right hand were busted or that person had no use of it or did not have a right hand.
Some cultures if they ketch a person stealing there right hand is cut off.
This by tradition does not effect women at all. This is only a mans thing. Older men were taught not to shake the hand of a women. Many cultures still carry on with this tradition.

These people relating this to sex or rape are deliberately steering you wrong. Yes, predators are out there, but a handshake is in no way an indicator of sexual intent. The handshake is a formal greeting ritual that indicates that both parties intend peace and respect toward the other. It is usually used in business situations, or in situations where one is being introduced to another. It came about in old times when men wore swords. They were giving their sword hand in a gesture that showed they mean no harm and come in the spirit of friendship. This was almost like baring ones throat back in that time. It doesn't carry quite so weighty a meaning now, and is more something done simply because it's what you do when you formally meet someone. Now this guy you met, reaching do high is unusual. I can't speak to why he would do that, and can see why you were a bit taken aback by it. If he was a bit pushy or aggressive, these are cues you should keep in mind when dealing with him. Really, you can tell a lot about someone by his handshake.

In some cultures overseas, shaking with the left hand is an insult. The idea is that they wipe their butts with the left hand after a bowel movement, and eat and shake hands with the right hand. That is why they punish thieves by cutting off their right hand. Ostensibly, they then have to wipe and eat with the same hand. However what the old timers meant by a left hand shake was an insult. That would have to have regional connotations if it happened here in America.

The boy scouts use a left handed handshake. Some other cultures use their left hand to wipe their bum. The best solution is, if someone offers you a left hand offer them yours in return. Let them decide to take hold

Dude-You're reading waaaaaaaaaaay too much into it.

Maybe his right hand was dirty? Maybe his right hand is used to pick areas of his body that you really wouldn't want on you? Maybe he's so old that he forgot to formally shake with the right hand?

Stop triiiiiiiipin cuzzin...
