Even though we are repeatedly to not judge a book by its cover, we insist on doing it. We determine where we are in relation to others, the pecking order and adjust our demeanor to that perception. We of course adjust as we reassess.

Yes, I do sometimes change my attitude in front of certain people, because the way that person may make me feel, or because what is expected of me when I am around that person, but that doesn't make me fake or anything. For example: I change my attitude around my boss because I want to seem a little enthusiastic about my job. I might change my attitude around the people I see at the financial aid office, because I know I need to have on a certain seriousness about myself to get some aid. I also appear a little mad before I even walk in because of previous experiences with not getting the service or aid I feel I deserve. I also might change my attitude instictively to happy around my mom and not know it, because she makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.:)

People want to maintain the best character in all situations, but the nature of what is really the most desirable depends on the situation. They want to portray themselves in the best light.
For a truly sociological look at this, check out the work of Erving Goffman.

Because of the way the people are.some people you can just be yourself, and some expect something more....It is their attitude that makes you act different...its like something inside you rises up and you just can,t help it,your really not at ease around these people for some reason,I really think they bring it out in you because of their attitude.....

I think everyone acts totally different with different groups of people in order to get along. I dont think this is a bad thing I just think everyone should be able to be themselves all the time.

I become very quiet around people I don't care for. I do not consider myself two faced, so talking to those I don't like then talk about them when they are not around, is not my style.

I simply keep quiet and limit my time spent with those who do nothing to benefit my life or my family member's lives

It may change because of the level of respect you have for that person, or whether there is some elevated attractiveness vs. disgust.
Mostly it depends upon whether we want someone to like us, or we don't care ..
