So tjhat they can get stuck up there and land the rest of us responsible tax paying folks with huge rescue bills. Anyone who gets stuck in a mountain should either have to pay for the cost of their rescue or become lion food.

Lots of reasons - excitement, adventure, testing yourself, pitting yourself against nature, health and fitness reasons and just for the sheer enjoyment of it.
Like any activity, it doesn't appeal to all people but those who take part derive a great deal of fun and a real sense of achievement. It's something I've been doing for many years now and I can look back at perhaps 100 different expeditions and mountains and recall many great memories and challenges.
I think 'challenges' is the key word as many mountain climbers are always seeking a more demanding challenge than the last one.
Different people will have different reasons but it was perhaps best answered by the British climber George Mallory when, in 1924, he was asked why he was attempting to climb Everest and answered 'because it's there'. Mallory and Irvine broke the record for the highest point reached and may have reached the summit of Everest. They were last seen ascending very close to the summit before being obscured by cloud and weren't seen again for decades until Mallory's body was found in the ice near the summit.

Because it is a huge test of mental and physical abilities....believe it or not, it is more mental. AND when you reach the top, well, you would have to be a climber to describe the breathtaking landscape. When the burn sets in, the throbbing in your feet stop, and the little scrapes on the hands start to heal, there is a sense of satisfaction that cannot be replace by any other sport.

Because it's there. I once heard a climber (Jamie Clarke) speak this summer who climbed Everest 3 times..the first two times he failed and on the 3rd time he made. His reason...because it was there. When he finally made it, he stood on top for 5 minutes and realized there was nothing higher in the world and that he made it. That was his dream and he did it. Can many of us say that?

For some people it's fun and adventurous. I wouldn't do it myself, but I wouldn't bash others who want to do it as long as they do things responsibly.
